In 2020, CreateBase entered a nation-wide competition to represent New Zealand on the global stage for Red Bull Basement University. Red Bull Basement (RBB) is a global competition where university student innovators get the opportunity to pitch their ideas to the world and a panel of judges to ultimately be crowned the winners for that year. This inclusive and welcoming initiative aims to connect and inspire all students to challenge the status quo by coming up with student-to-student ideas that can lead to a better tomorrow.
The RBB competition is a journey just as much as it is a destination. Each national finalist team is provided mentoring and support both during and before the final competition. We were able to talk to inspiring mentors, Odeta Iseviciute and Camila Carvalho, who gave us invaluable advice for preparing CreateBase for our first launch. Closer to home, we were also given the opportunity to work with Hatch to redefine our brand positioning strategy and prepare for our final competition pitch. Hatch is a remarkable company based in Auckland dedicated to moving businesses forward with strategies, websites, apps, and brands. These experiences were opportunities that we would never have had access to otherwise and helped to shape and solidify CreateBase’s vision into what it is today.
Being part of RBB, it was inspiring to meet so many passionate and dedicated young mindsfrom around the world. It gives us hope that people are thinking about the problems faced by our and future generations and are aiming high to solve them. Being able to talk to mentors from all over the world was incredibly beneficial for us. It was also both exciting and motivating to receive media coverage, and valuable experience to practice for future interviews. Facilitating all of these interactions in the current state of the world was a big challenge and we appreciate that Red Bull was able to find a way to still host the event.
We remain in contact with Red Bull New Zealand and are really excited for potential collaborations in the future.
